11/22/2023 0 Comments Dc comics gorilla grodd![]() ![]() Though many superheroes practice the same doctrine practiced by the likes of Batman (such as a refusal to kill in all but the most extreme of circumstances), there are many others that are willing to reach for a lethal solution from the outset. With this in mind, Solovar and other apes from Gorilla City must tolerate his continued existence lest they unleash his evil once more, but this is also true of others. The risk his actions pose to the apes and the world beyond must in fact be balanced against the risks of what might occur should his years of evil be released back into his people’s wider consciousness. This can be seen in the fact that he has not been executed for his many crimes. Yet his status as a psychic repository for his people’s sins means that he is of far greater value to gorilla kind alive than he is dead. While the likes of Solovar, and undoubted legions of other noble apes, are rightly lauded for their own virtuous achievements, it would appear to be the case that much of these actions owe themselves to Grodd in some way or another, as without his accumulation of ignominy, their own natures would be viscously distorted.Īs a violent, genocidal, megalomaniacal dictator with delusions of grandeur, it goes without saying that Grodd cannot be allowed to run rampant. Looking at the positive effect the transmission of iniquity from the tribe to Grodd has had on Katangalan society, and the benefits their new mentality has had on humanity beyond their borders, one can conclude that Grodd’s mere existence makes him more than simply their greatest villain, but their greatest hero as well. Thus his continued existence as keeper of his tribes sins goes becomes a form spiritual absolution. Taken in this context, Grodd’s absorption and taking on of his peoples worse qualities can be seen as a form of unwitting sacrifice. This ritual was performed as a kind of sacrifice, absolving the people of their iniquities and helping purify the community. In biblical mythology there is the concept of the scapegoat A goat upon which a priest would lay the sins of the people before casting it out into the wilderness, taking with it the sins of the tribe. Thusly any blame for his later actions cannot be placed squarely upon his shoulders. Solovar’s assertion that his kind felt a new peace because all the fears and angers of their past were collecting in one mind implies then that Grodd had no choice in the matter. The documented benefit experienced by wider Katangalan society proves that the accretion of negative tendencies in Grodd’s own psyche was something beyond his control, exacerbating whatever villainous proclivities were already there. Though undeniably a villain to his very core, the influence of his species' acquired dual-alpha dynamic cannot be understated. The peculiarities of the apes of Katangala, and their dimorphic psychic morality, may then absolve a certain extent of Grodd’s actions. Yet the depths of Grodd’s wickedness may not be entirely his fault. His villainy is so monumental in fact that it transcends the delineation of species in a way that few are capable. He has murdered innocent creatures all across the globe and even attempted genocide against entire species. ![]() They grew kinder, more tolerant and soon opened their society to the rest of the world.Īs a member of this unique society, Grodd is widely lauded as its greatest villain. Grodd seemed to absorb all the hatred and violence of their species, leading to an uplifting of the others altruistic tendencies. This had the unexpected effect of polarizing their collective psyche. But when Solovar took power from Grodd he outlawed this barbaric practice leaving the former king alive. Typically, when one leader dies his successor eats their brain, inheriting their knowledge to help them lead. Yet, because of their apish heritage, they naturally select an alpha to lead them. Namely, that the gorillas of Katangala exist both as independent beings and as a collective psyche. ![]() Though there to learn from Grodd the location of his long-lost matriarch, Aquaman learns from the gorilla’s new king, Solovar, the reason for Grodd’s stay of execution. While on the trail of his missing mother in Aquaman#37 (by Jeff Parker, Paul Pelletier, Sean Parsons, Rain Beredo and Dezi Sienty), Arthur Curry passed through an atlantean gateway ending up in far off Katangala, otherwise known as Gorilla City. ![]()
